The origins of the farm and dark sky reserve Rogge Cloof (meaning rye ravine) date back to 1756 when Joachim Scholtz, the son of German and Nordic immigrants to Africa, acquired the property. Since then over more than 250 years, various owners have loved, nurtured and developed these hostile lands enduring lions, droughts, snow and freezing winds. Located at an altitude of between 1400 to 1700 meters, with magnificent clear skies and expansive plains, Rogge Cloof is truly home to the greatest heavens on earth!

Rogge Cloof is a biosphere reserve, 15km outside Sutherland on the R354, on route from Matjiesfontein towards Sutherland.

ACCESSING ROGGE CLOOF ACCOMMODATION: FROM THE BLUE GATES INTO THE VILLAGE ITSELF.
• The units are situated within the Rogge Cloof Village.
• The Village is 11 km away from the Rogge Cloof Reception and Restaurant area.
• This allows for a leisurely self-game-drive through the reserve, on the way to the unit.
• Roads are gravel, but have been upgraded and are accessible by sedan vehicle.
• SUV or 4x4 Vehicles will allow guests the opportunity to explore the reserve area more comfortably on their own.

Rogge Cloof offers self-catering accommodation units, as well as a restaurant(Roggebrood).

Roggebrood, the restaurant ,offers two lounges and a broad ‘stoep’ where guests may linger to gaze at the stars, the game , snow covered Karoo land, or just enjoy the peace and quiet.

Roggebrood (and most of the reserve), offers exceptional views of Salpeterkop, the youngest volcano in Africa.

The reserve is home to a variety of game (springbok, gemsbok, black wildebeest, fallow deer, grey rheebok, zebra) and offers guests the opportunity to play in the snow during winter months, whilst having a view of the brightest stars in the universe.

Several activities are offered:
Game Viewing trips, Fat Bike excursions, Mountain Bike trails, Salpeterkop volcano hikes, fossil exploration hikes, stargazing, historical hikes, and much more.

Rogge Cloof is proud to offer its own wines and guests may book wine tasting sessions to experience our quality wines: Rogge Cloof Salpeterkop (Syrah), Rogge Cloof Joachim Scholtz (Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah Blend) and Rogge Cloof Sneeukop (Chenin Blanc).  The grapes for these wines originate from the first vines of the Sutherland-Karoo region and, at 1500m above sea level; this is the coldest wine producing region in South Africa.
