Christmas all around

Christmas all around

About two weeks ago we had our Christmas ‘Song’ service (Kerssangdiens). What an event it was, people came from every corner of town and all the farms, the church was quite full and with lights everywhere, the event felt fittingly festive. The whole service consisted out of different Christmas songs and readings from the Christmas Story in the Bible. Sutherland even showcased its own male trio, with big songs like, ‘you raise me up’, echoing beautifully throughout the old, magnificent church. And everyone seemed so content and appreciative in the moment.
Sutherland has many different interesting people, but it is always amazing to see all these people come together in the place where the town started – its church. Despite all the differences, the gossip stories, perhaps even the feuds – it is at events like these that the small community feels like a ‘community’ again! And even though I miss a more modern church, with alternative accompanying instruments to the organ, I’ve learnt to appreciate these moments for what they are and savour the experience of all the joy of sharing these special days with people you barely know, but still feel a part of.
Merry Christmas and I pray that you travel safely!

God Bless!
