Happy 2011!
It is unbelievable… 2010 with all its expectations has passed in a blink and we are now standing with both feet in 2011. What a year. We survived the World Cup, although in Sutherland we did not share as much in the excitement, we did have rugby supporters following the soccer games though! We survived droughts, and started many new projects that still have to be completed. But most importantly, my residence in Sutherland is now reaching a more permanent status - no transition from Cape Town life to Sutherland life is necessary - I am now feeling at home. I realised this even more after returning from my vacation.
I left Sutherland for Kimberley on December 16th 2010. Part business, part pleasure, I travelled with a bit of hesitance as I was unsure if I could leave my business behind and relax. I soon found out that it was easy to escape all the worry and started enjoying the beautiful setting of Kimberley’s surrounds. No, I did not get a chance to visit the Big Hole, but I caught up on my movies, swimming and reading - unfortunately not my tanning! I spent New Years in a farmer’s community north of Kimberley called Jankempdorp - quite suitable I thought. I had a blast, and loved the beautiful thunderstorms and ‘greenness’ of the whole area. I left with a bit of a heavy heart - I was now leaving family behind (again), vacation is over and it is back to reality! But when I got home on Sunday night, nothing felt better. The slight breeze that is a constant in Sutherland, the farmhouse smell of our stone house, the grey and blue features that paints Sutherland.
As they say in Afrikaans: ‘Oos-wes-tuis-bes’
So, I start the year with a new excitement and a new appreciation for my home…
