Oudag se Winkel opening soon

Punted as a coffee shop-cum-deli-cum-tourism office, this is where visitors will find all the info they need for their stay, indulge in a spot of rustic retail therapy, enjoy a coffee and a snack, possibly served with a side-order of local gossip.

The deli section will sell a selection of local edible produce - think biltong, jams, chutneys, preserves, quince products and other delicious goodies - while the craft shelves will display sheepskin items, knitwear and artwork alongside branded t-shirts and hats bearing the Discover Sutherland logo.

The shop is a long-awaited addition to Sutherland and is sure to be a boost to the local food, art and craft industry by providing people with an outlet for their creativity and products.

The shop, called Oudag se Winkel in honour of owner Kobus du Plessis’s father, a prominent figure in the town whose nickname ‘Oudag’ refers to his age and wisdom, is very easy to find. It’s in a great spot right next door to the town’s lone petrol station on “the other tarred road”, meaning the only other tarred road besides the one that brings visitors into Sutherland. This is the same road that leads up to the Observatory, and although it’s officially called Sarel Cilliers Street no-one uses street names so just ask for directions to the petrol station.
