Only in Sutherland
Everyday so far has been an adventure. Sure there is a certain adjustment phase one needs to go through, and definite patterns you have to pick up on. For instance, if you don’t hit the shops the day fresh fruits and vegetables are delivered, you are very often out of luck for the week. And cat litter – impossible to find in Sutherland.
But I always feel that the good and the bad all come together to make Sutherland a real joy to live in.
For instance: It is only in Sutherland where you hang out washing and the clothes and sheets start to freeze as you hang them out…Where a normal international rugby match feels like a World Cup. Where the streetlights are dimmed in order to observe the nightsky better, causing you to think twice about walking home after a ‘night out in town’.
And the nightlife in Sutherland is indeed different – you find young and old, in all shapes and sizes, literally sitting ‘around the same fire’, only in Sutherland, where it is never too cold for a braai! It is only in Sutherland where chicken is a vegetable and a vegetarian turns carnivore after a few months.
The other day a construction worker had to quickly cut through a piece of iron with a welder, with sparks flying in the air – he said, ‘this would make a stunning photo if you set the shutterspeed on the camera a little slower’. I thought to myself – it is here where poets are inspired, writers find stories, ‘hard’ men notice beautiful things and it’s only in Sutherland where I could find the time to see the exceptional beauty in what people say and do.
