What are you doing here?

My newest addition to our team here at our coffee shop is quite young. She is turning 21 by the end of this year. Since I am also relatively young, we have had the strangest reactions when visitors enter our little shop – What are you doing here? In this town? But why? As if they did not expect to find any living thing under the age of 60.

But Sutherland has a lot to offer and we normally just laugh and shrug – thinking, if only you knew… not only do we live in a beautiful environment, we also have an extremely demanding social life and interesting events to keep us busy. And on quiet nights, there’s always DSTV to keep us going!
Jokes aside, what is amazing about Sutherland is that each day brings its own little adventure. Events like fairs and braais are never ending.  And you can actually pub crawl in this town! The important rule is, however, to be relaxed, patient – most of all – never be rushed. Things move slower in this town and that is definitely not a bad thing!

A typical night would start with a few drinks and chats at the Jupiter Restaurant. This is also our favourite spot for watching rugby or eating pizzas (and steak of course), but their pizza is definitely the best (and probably the only) in town – wood-fired and offering lamb as a topping, what more can you ask for! From here you can visit Perlman’s Pub and Grill, where Karaoke is spontaneous, Granny is one of the most friendly waitresses and Annie’s curries are potently aromatic and strong!  On Wednesday nights there is normally a special treat with a meal that is a little different and of course, THE game (invented by an engineer from the Observatory – I think), Knobbel. Until this day, I still don’t get the rules, but it is always fun!

If you still have some energy left, darts at the hotel is always fun! Here Jaen also cooks up a few interesting dishes, like potjiekos or snoek in the inside braai at the bar. If you are one for very crowded but spirited rugby games, you can enjoy your Super 14 match here.
And, of course, last but not least, the White House. This is probably the place to be if you are not planning on going to bed early… and you might meet some interesting bikers.
Don’t forget – for those romantic, expensive but exclusive evenings, i.e. an evening for two where no one knows you – there is also Cluster d’Hote. This we save for special events like anniversaries or Valentine’s.

I can go on and on and on, the list is endless…
So, if you’re visiting Sutherland, don’t be fooled by its sleepy appearances – we have lots and lots of fun here – believe me, I am only touching on the tip of the iceberg, and of course you have to be here to have a genuine Sutherland experience. I can’t tell you everything! So visit soon.
