Silhouette Hiking Trail - Ezeljaght farm

Silhouette Hiking Trail - Ezeljaght farm

The Silhouette Trail is a two-day circular trail on the farm Ezeljaght, 22 km from Sutherland. It is family-friendly, with the first day13km and the second day 9km.  It was laid out in 1996 by Prof. Leon Hugo, the developer of the Green Flag accreditation system for hiking trails, and winds between outcrops of dolomite rocks which give the trail its unique flavour. At sunset the rocks take on a life of their own, becoming animals, people and other silhouettes against the sky, informing the name of the trail.

Accommodation is in two huts built in the traditional Karoo style. Each sleeps 11 people and have a toilet and shower. There is an open fire in one hut and a wood-burning stove at the other, keeping visitors warm during the cold Karoo winter nights. Parking is available at the first hut which has been upgraded to suit those do not wish to walk the trail, but want a farm stay, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city: the shower is gas-heated, crockery and cutlery is provided and there are short walks laid out, including a 2 km sunset trail. The first hut has a boma and the second a lapa under a cluster of poplar trees, making for excellent braaing under the starry Karoo skies.

The route is designed to take in all the places of interest on the farm, often climbing to the top of the koppies (rocky hills) with breath-taking views across the open plains of the Karoo. The world-famous Sutherland Observatory can sometimes be glimpsed in the distance. There are ladders, tunnels through the rocks, and an unexpected river, which makes for a lovely lunch spot on the first day. The relatively short daily distances allow plenty of time to examine the plants, look for animals, take photographs, absorb the unique beauty of the Karoo and soak up its peace and quiet.
The rich plantlife includes roosmaryn, perdebos, bitterbos, renosterbos and a wild variety of succulents. The rock formations house a large population of hyrax (dassie), which lures birds of prey such as the black eagle. There are jackal, small cats, porcupines, buck, hares, baboons and several bird species. Plentiful lichens, also known as rock flowers, can be seen in shades of red, yellow and green. The rare rock “maasvleisklip” (mince-meat rock), which recalls intertwined mince-meat worms, can be found in a specific area of the farm.

The Jupiter Restaurant

The Jupiter Restaurant

The Jupiter was established in 2002 on historic Jubilee Street. This street was the obvious choice, as the oldest houses are situated here, including the Louwhuis museum, which belonged to the family of the Afrikaans poet and writer NP van Wyk Louw.

The Jupiter Restaurant boasts a full a la carte menu, specialising in authentic Karoo lamb dishes, to be enjoyed in front of a warm fireplace with great wines from the Route 62 wine estates.

We offer a full bar where major South African sporting events can be enjoyed on a big-screen TV.

Stargazing at Sterland

Stargazing at Sterland

For a more personal stargazing experience at ‘Sterland’, a privately owned and managed establishment, contact Jurg Wagener of Sterland group Guest houses and stargazing!
Bookings for this very popular activity are still essential to avoid disappointment.

The show at Sterland starts at 18:00 / 19:00 in winter and summer 20:00 / 21:00, lasting for two hours.(approximately) *please see exact time at bottom.
The stargazer is first treated with an indoor presentation on a three meter big screen explaining all the constellations and sizes in the universe.

Inside the dam are numerous posters of Astronomy and books to be read. After that the stargazers are taken outside to the Muisbos Amphi theatre and first treated with an explanation of how to find South, with the aid of the Magellan Clouds, Southern Cross and other stars. They make use of a very powerful laser so that each stargazer can see what they are talking about.

All the relevant constellations, stars, planets and objects to be observed are then explained before looking through the eye piece of the telescope.

At present they make use of 6 x 11 inch (280mm) Celestron Go-To telescopes, each with its own GPS. Each telescope is operated by a knowledgeable person. Every stargazer gets enough time to enjoy the object to be seen.
