The Succulent Karoo is one of two Southern African regions designated as biodiversity hotspots by Conservation International, making the Karoo an essential destination for birders. The Succulent Karoo biome known as the Tanqua Karoo, named after the river cutting through that region, is considered by experts to be among the finest for bird watching, especially in spring when the vegetation comes to life, with nest-building, raising chicks and displaying.

4x4 Routes , Hiking and Bike Trails

Blesfontein Guest Farm 4x4 , Hiking and Biking Trails
A number of 4x4 routes have been established in the district, often on farms which also offer other outdoor activities.
Blesfontein Guestfarm has grade 1 - 2.  -  4x4 route (for the whole family)

Hikes and new mountain bike trails and sports a variety of fauna and flora.

Skurweberg Guestfarm also offers 4x4 driving for all skill levels and enough to keep the whole family amused.
Other activities on the farm include horse riding,  hiking and mountain biking.

For less experienced 4x4 fans there is the temptation of gentle scenic drives aimed at enjoying the magnificent mountain views and fauna and flora, with the possibility of encountering grey rhebuck, duiker and black eagle.

Or, for the more adventurous there is the Baboon Trail obstacle course, with escape routes at the major challenges. The trickier sections include some very serious rocky ascents, with rocky terrain in most places other than along the river where there is water, sand and mud.

The farm has successfully hosted the Karoo 4x4 Challenge, but many will simply delight in the scenery and family fun, enjoying the magnificent views from the top of the escarpment. Another option is the Sneeukrans 4x4 Trail on an adjoining farm, which will keep you busy for three to five hours along a 52km route , both routes are circular routes. For more information on these farms, see featured accommodation.

Skurweberg Guestfarm also offers unique hiking trails and mountain bike trails for the whole family.

Unlike some parts of the Karoo, Sutherland does not have extreme summer heat because of its altitude, while in winter there is often a covering of snow on the mountains, making it very pleasant for hikers and bikers. Most routes are on farms, each with unique scenery and a variety of plant and animal life.

The Silhouette Hiking Trail on the farm Ezeljaght
Silhouette Hiking Trail is a must for all the hiker enthusiasts , The Silhouette Trail is a two-day circular trail on the farm Ezeljaght, 22 km from Sutherland. It is family-friendly, with the first day 13km and the second 9km. It was laid out in 1996 by Prof. Leon Hugo, the developer of the Green Flag accreditation system for hiking trails, and winds between outcrops of dolomite rocks which give the trail its unique flavour.

At sunset the rocks take on a life of their own, becoming animals, people and other silhouettes against the sky, informing the name of the trail.

Accommodation is in two huts built in the traditional Karoo style. Each sleeps 11 people and have a toilet and shower. There is an open fire in one hut and a wood-burning stove at the other, keeping visitors warm during the cold Karoo winter nights. Parking is available at the first hut which has been upgraded to suit those do not wish to walk the trail, but want a farm stay, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city: the shower is gas-heated, crockery and cutlery is provided and there are short walks laid out, including a 2 km sunset trail.
The first hut has a boma and the second a lapa under a cluster of poplar trees, making for excellent braaing under the starry Karoo skies.

The route is designed to take in all the places of interest on the farm, often climbing to the top of the koppies (rocky hills) with breath-taking views across the open plains of the Karoo. The world-famous Sutherland Observatory can sometimes be glimpsed in the distance. There are ladders, tunnels through the rocks, and an unexpected river, which makes for a lovely lunch spot on the first day. The relatively short daily distances allow plenty of time to examine the plants, look for animals, take photographs, absorb the unique beauty of the Karoo and soak up its peace and quiet.
The rich plantlife includes roosmaryn, perdebos, bitterbos, renosterbos and a wild variety of succulents. The rock formations house a large population of hyrax (dassie), which lures birds of prey such as the black eagle. There are jackal, small cats, porcupines, buck, hares, baboons and several bird species. Plentiful lichens, also known as rock flowers, can be seen in shades of red, yellow and green. The rare rock “maasvleisklip” (mince-meat rock), which recalls intertwined mince-meat worms, can be found in a specific area of the farm.

Advance booking is a good idea and hikers are advised to pack additional blankets if taking the trail on in winter
