Oudag se Winkel
A nostalgic coffeeshop, called Oudag se Winkel, opened on the first of August 2009 here in Sutherland! On sale is ‘braaivleis’, ‘roosterkoeke’ (Bread baked on the open fire) and ‘braaiwors’ (barbequed sausages), along with a typical farm-style coffee. From time to time served in a self-help manner, with a spread of yummy jams and cheese on a big old table, right next to a cosy fire-place. Coffee is served in authentic ‘blikbekers’ (enamel mugs), with a sheep ‘posing’ on the words ‘Sutherland’, printed on its side.
In the words of Jolene du Plessis (co-owner): “I truly enjoyed all the guests we received! In response to my question, “Kuier julle lekker?” (Are you having a good time), a lady answered quite quickly (and I quote), ‘Ons kuier nou ‘moer’ lekker!’ (Difficult to translate, but they were thoroughly enjoying themselves)”.
The feeling is that of an old farm kitchen, where everyone can sit and talk for hours, and enjoy quality coffee and homebaked bread - a space where people can be nostalgic about the past, but enjoy and relive sweet memories, even if they did not grow up on a Karoo farm.
Discover Sutherland (Tourism/Information office), home to http://www.www.discoversutherland.co.za is situated on the same premises
So when you are in Sutherland, please pop even just to say ‘hi’ or revisit ‘the good old days’ by browsing through Oudag se Winkel.
