Gunsfontein offers visitors a chance to enjoy the peace and tranquility on the most historic farm in the Sutherland District.

The historic 3 bed roomed farm house can accommodate up to nine people, making it ideal for families, friends and groups etc. 
The house is fully equipped for self-catering with indoor and outdoor braai facilities.

Gunsfontein is the farm where poet NP van Wyk Louw was raised. The original farm dwelling was a corbelled house and dates back to +- 1756 . This house, still standing, has not been restored, but is still in a good condition.Other interesting historical remains are the ruins of old British forts with shooting holes – built during the Anglo Boer War. The farm also has beautiful view points with scenes of the Karoo mountains and rivers. For avid bird watchers there is rich bird life on the farm dams.

Activities

The farm also offers ample opportunity to stay active.
A scenic 4×4 mountain pass ( difficulty level 2-3). This route will not damage your vehicle and women will enjoy it as well. +-80km of farm roads. Most of these are suitable for 4×2 vehicles. Paths in the veld can also be used as HIKING TRAILS. All roads are suitable for MOUNTAIN BIKING, STARGAZING: Sutherland is 22km away (12mins) – Jurg Wagener.

How to find us

Location S32 34 00.5 E20 40 57.3 Gunsfontein is situated next to route R354 between Matjiesfontein and Sutherland at the top of the Verlatekloof pass. 96 km from Matjiesfontein the road sign indicates Klein Roggeveld. Follow the well maintained wide gravel road for 7km, you are then on Gunsfontein Guest Farm. From this turn off Sutherland is 15km further on the tar road.
